A Taste of Greece

For this residential project, the challenge was to take a spacious walk-out basement and turn it into a space for entertaining lots of guests. And within the large room create a feeling of intimacy and coziness.

“It was a really dark space,” says Laura. “It really was like a hunting lodge. It was heavy on the dark colors. The client had been to Greece and was really inspired. She loved the bright and cozy designs. In order to lighten it up and go with that theme, we went with cream colors. We incorporated art she brought back and took inspiration from her favorite photos from the trip.”

The room also needed to meet the goal of fostering homey gatherings. “They have a large family and like to entertain a lot. So we wanted it to be very comfortable yet durable. So there are performance fabrics. And we went with separate seating. Some are just outside, some are inside, and there’s a dining area. I think that’s really important, especially in an area where people will gather. Not everyone will be in the same place at the same time. The vignettes create little spaces within a big space for a more intimate feel.”

The final transformation was a space that brought what the client loved into her home. “I love what we did. It’s a really big difference.”
